In Defense of Beginnings

The Ace Theist

A post about community-building & advocacy as a work in progress, talking about matters of age, time, history, community memory, genealogies, appeals to tradition, coalition building, and constitutive rhetoric. Or in other words, a post about how some things are actually newer than you think — and that’s okay. Partly inspired by Laura’s contribution to this past January Carnival of Aros.

The 2019 Ace Community Survey is now open!

Für Englischkönnende: Hingehen und ausfüllen.

The Asexual Census

It’s that time of year again – we are now recruiting participants for the Ace Community Survey!

The Ace Community Survey, run by the Ace Community Survey Team, collects valuable information on the demographics and experiences of members in the ace community, including asexual, demisexual, gray-asexual, and related identities. It is the largest survey of ace communities and creates a valuable pool of data for future ace community activists and researchers.

This year, we are working in conjunction with Dr. Lauren Beach from the Institute for Gender and Sexual Minority Health and Wellbeing at Northwestern University. Our collaboration will help further research into health disparities of sexual minority groups.

The survey is open to anyone: ace, non-ace, or still questioning.  As long as you are 13 years of age or older we want to hear from you! We want to get a wide variety of responses from as many parts…

How I, As an Asexual, Do Not Decide to Have Sex

Aus Posteritätsgründen. Muss noch weiter drüber nachdenken.

The Notes Which Do Not Fit

In May I read a fantastic book called Deep Survival by Laurence Gonzales. It is about how and why some people survive extreme situations. The book describes a lot of the psychology of decision-making. It says that linear/logical thinking (associated with the neocortex of the brain) is terrible for making decisions. Instead, people rely on ‘emotional bookmarks’ to make decisions. ‘Emotional bookmarks’ are not just the brain, they involve much of the body. It turns out that ‘my gut tells me to do this’ and ‘my heart tells me to do this’ are not just figurative speech; the digestive organs and/or heart might be literally involved in the decision-making process. Animals with relatively few neurons in their brains can make decisions because it is not just the brain.

There are people with neurological damage who cannot use ‘emotional bookmarks’ or feel ‘gut feelings’ or their ‘heart’. They can still use…

CSD Karlsruhe am 1. Juni

Crunching the Umbrella and Spinning the Reinvention Treadmill

For posterity. Very true observations.

Back on March 8th, the day before I published my Genealogy of Queerplatonic, Siggy published a response of his own to the whole discussion, titling the post as „Death of the coiner“ (an allusion to Barthes‘ „Death of the Author“). In Cor’s addition onto that post, co wrote:

my main response is that it’s useful and arguably necessary for us to document and continually notify people of the pattern of semantic drift in words having to do with rejecting models and how they are reinscribed within those models to be less threatening

This post is about the same thing and that same dynamic: the pattern of ambiguous gray areas and umbrella words getting crunched into narrower redefinitions, leaving the need for their original ambiguity unmet, and paving the way for others to come along and try to reinvent…

Ace Pride 🖤♠️⚪️💜

Neuer Ace-Blog

Aces NRW

Erinnerung, dass asexuelle Menschen ‚pride‘ in Ihrer Identität finden dürfen. 🖤♠️⚪️💜
