How I, As an Asexual, Do Not Decide to Have Sex

Aus Posteritätsgründen. Muss noch weiter drüber nachdenken.

The Notes Which Do Not Fit

In May I read a fantastic book called Deep Survival by Laurence Gonzales. It is about how and why some people survive extreme situations. The book describes a lot of the psychology of decision-making. It says that linear/logical thinking (associated with the neocortex of the brain) is terrible for making decisions. Instead, people rely on ‘emotional bookmarks’ to make decisions. ‘Emotional bookmarks’ are not just the brain, they involve much of the body. It turns out that ‘my gut tells me to do this’ and ‘my heart tells me to do this’ are not just figurative speech; the digestive organs and/or heart might be literally involved in the decision-making process. Animals with relatively few neurons in their brains can make decisions because it is not just the brain.

There are people with neurological damage who cannot use ‘emotional bookmarks’ or feel ‘gut feelings’ or their ‘heart’. They can still use…

CSD Karlsruhe am 1. Juni

Crunching the Umbrella and Spinning the Reinvention Treadmill

For posterity. Very true observations.

[Note: This post has been crossposted to Pillowfort.]

Back on March 8th, the day before I published my Genealogy of Queerplatonic, Siggy published a response of his own to the whole discussion, titling the post as „Death of the coiner“ (an allusion to Barthes‘ „Death of the Author“). In Cor’s addition onto that post, co wrote:

my main response is that it’s useful and arguably necessary for us to document and continually notify people of the pattern of semantic drift in words having to do with rejecting models and how they are reinscribed within those models to be less threatening

This post is about the same thing and that same dynamic: the pattern of ambiguous gray areas and umbrella words getting crunched into narrower redefinitions, leaving the need for their original ambiguity unmet, and paving the way for others to come along and try to reinvent…

Ace Pride 🖤♠️⚪️💜

Neuer Ace-Blog

Aces NRW

Erinnerung, dass asexuelle Menschen ‚pride‘ in Ihrer Identität finden dürfen. 🖤♠️⚪️💜

Introducing: the Carnival of Aros

PSA — Vielleicht mag sich wer austoben.

The Asexual Agenda

By Siggy & Sennkestra, mirrored here

TL;DR: A blogging carnival is a regularly occurring event that collects submissions from bloggers and other creators on a single topic.  One example is The Asexual Agenda’s Carnival of Aces. Now, we are excited to announce the launch of a new sister carnival, the Carnival of Aros. This February, both carnivals are holding a joint event hosted by The Ace & Aro Advocacy Project, which is now accepting submissions on the theme of „The Relationship Between the Aro and Ace Communities“.  From March onwards, the Carnival of Aros will continue as an independent project, managed by Sennkestra, at its own website.  If you would like to participate or help, see the section “How you can help” at the bottom.

How it all started

As many of you may know, The Asexual Agenda has long sponsored the Carnival of…

Quoiro/WTFromantic: a brief timeline of disidentification with & personal rejection of romantic orientation

Schöne Zusammenfassung. Nein, niemand braucht ein „-romantisch“-Label, wenn’s nicht nützlich ist.

The Ace Theist

[Note: this post has been crossposted to Pillowfort.]

Since I’ve been thinking lately on the topics of those-who-struggle-with-labels and the process of getting new terms to take root, I decided I’d put together a brief timeline of one specific subset of that: disidentification with and personal rejection of romantic orientation.

Featured in this post: the coinage and meaning of wtfromantic, the subsequent coinage and meaning of quoiromantic, some discussion over competing definitions, and a sampling of personal reflection posts on the topic demonstrating its continued relevance over the past eight years. Formatted by year, with select text excerpts in blockquotes.

We need your help: Volunteer for the Survey Team

Signal Boost

The Asexual Census

The Ace Community Survey Team is currently looking for new volunteers, particularly people with programming or writing skills, as we try to work on our backlog of data and get out more analysis to the public.

The Survey Team is responsible for designing and releasing the Ace Community Survey each year.  The Asexual Community Survey is one of the biggest data sources of quantitative data about asexual-spectrum people, which also means there is a lot of work to be done analyzing it.

The major roles that we currently need volunteers for are:

  • Basic analysis of survey data
    • We use Python for most analysis, but even people without experience in Python can learn how to use it.
  • Exploratory analysis of survey data
    • We need curious people who can analyze data, and produce results that are of interest to the ace community.
  • Improving code infrastructure
    • We’d like to further streamline our data…
